Venture Team Leader Qualifications and Expectations at SARA Inc.
Overview: Executive position leading teams of scientists, engineers and program managers for a cutting edge small business serving the aerospace and defense industry.
Position/Responsibilities
- Team leader of an elite collection of small ($50K to $1M each) research and development (R & D) contracts and/or technical services contracts including their associated technologies The collection and portfolio may be expanded/modified at the discretion of this team leader, who is responsible to grow its sales to beyond $3M per year, by the end of his/her fifth year.
- Lead a team of 3 to 15 engineers, scientists, program managers and technicians Includes some direct supervisory responsibility, such as job assignments and job excellence and provides inputs to periodic and annual reviews.
- Coordinate with the separate business administration department which supplies support in the areas of finance, accounting, contracts, asset control & tracking, security and clerical.
- Coordinate with the other Venture Team Leaders and Business Areas and their technical teams, borrowing support and/or loaning support, as programs require.
- Reports to a Business Area Manager and coordinates with company CEO, company President, President and Vice President of Engineering to secure sales for her/his own team and to advise on the general direction of the company.
- Coach, counsel, hire, fire and train a maturing and growing technical staff
- Invent, innovate, discover (and/or inspire the team to do so) new technologies and/or applications to extend and expand the business area, the sales and the company Author, lead and/or participate in the preparation, submission and negotiation of proposals thereto.
- Maintain, build and grow relationships between the company and the customer community through regular phone calls and periodic visits with existing customers, with their associates (both at their place of business and through community contacts) and with new contacts established by other members of the company while sharing the company’s full capability with their customers and contacts The purpose of these relationships is to better execute the existing business and to expand or add new contract relationships, so as to increase sales.
- Position expects out of state travel on the average of at least one 3 to 4 day trip per month.
Education and Experience
- Technical or military service bachelor's degree or higher required.
- Advanced courses and/or advanced degrees in business development and/or marketing preferred.
- 20 or more years in aerospace or defense business Any military service years apply, and having served in the military is preferred (Many of the following experiences may have overlapped or have occurred simultaneously).
- At least 5 years as lead engineer or project engineer for technology development contracts required, unless the candidate has operational military experience that can be substituted Both experiences are preferred Please address:
- At least 5 years of association with contracts that were involved in field-testing, preferably at government ranges or facilities Participation in military combat deployments and live-fire training can be substituted Both experiences are preferred Please address:
- At least 5 years as program manager or deputy program manager for technology development contracts Experience can be in private industry or in government position (civilian or military). Please address:
- Frequent customer contact Frequently the principle in major briefings to customers.
- Frequent experience as the sole visitor or the lead visitor to government or test facilities. Please address:
- Frequent successful participation in proposal activities including several times as the proposal lead Please list.
- Experience on "acquisition teams" or "venture teams" that advanced one or some technologies across multiple research and/or development contracts across several years Please address:
- Regular association with two or more DoD research and/or development agencies Please list.
- Experience "traveling" at least one week per month during at least one specific 2-year period Military deployment qualifies for this experience. Please identify period(s) and task(s):
Specialties
(Any one specialty is sufficient, more than one is preferred)
- Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) evaluation and Testing.
- High Power Microwave and RF Weapons systems and subsystems.
- Analytical Database Software; manipulation, modification, operation (Lab View preferred).
- Passive remote sensing (preferably unattended): Acoustic, Seismic, Infrared, other (specify).
- Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) subsystems and sensor integration.
- Ground-based or low altitude airborne Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) system and subsystems (may include system integration thereof).
- Electromagnetic transmission, especially as applied in application other than communications.
- Electromagnetic signal detection and signal processing, especially as applied in application other than communications.
- Communications systems and subsystems.
- EMI/EMC instrumentation and analysis.
- Sensor stream processing and/or image processing - algorithms or real-time software or electronics design or systems applications.
Expectations
In summary, we expect the Venture Team Leader to:
- Make projected sales or better (thereby recovering the budgeted overhead).
- Do it at a profit (including cost of cash flow & assets).
- Keep their share of the team employed & strive to grow (secure future sales)
(even if by planning time for them on another Business Area’s projects).
- Keep their share of the team working well, and proactively grow/shrink the team to achieve i & ii (keep/grow the company’s reputation as a good place to work).
- Keep/grow the company’s reputation as a good contractor.
